The Detroit Red Wings announced Wednesday they’ve signed defenseman Ben Chiarot to a three-year contract extension.
The deal carries an average annual value of $3.85 million.
Chiarot, 34, has four goals and seven assists in 54 games this season. He’s averaging 21:07 of ice time per contest.
However, his minus-7.5 expected defensive goals above replacement mark ranks last among all NHL defensemen this campaign, according to Evolving-Hockey.
The extension makes Chiarot one of Detroit’s highest-paid defensemen going forward.
Among Red Wings blue-liners, only Moritz Seider is under contract for longer and carries a higher cap hit.
This marks Chiarot’s fourth season with the Red Wings. He’s also played for the Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, and Florida Panthers across his 13-year NHL career.
The signing gives Detroit defensive depth as they continue their rebuild.
