The Florida Panthers damaged the Stanley Cup during their championship celebration, according to the Associated Press.

The famous trophy now has a cracked bowl and a dented bottom. It’s not the first time and likely won’t be the last.

The Panthers won their second consecutive championship at home Tuesday night, beating Edmonton in six games.

Following tradition, the team partied with the Cup into the early morning hours. The celebration continued in Fort Lauderdale well into Wednesday afternoon.

Repairs Underway

A Hockey Hall of Fame spokesperson said the Cup’s keepers are taking steps to fix the damage. They plan to have it repaired before Sunday’s parade.

The 37-pound Cup is made of silver and a nickel alloy. This makes it relatively easy to reshape when damaged.

Nothing New

Damage is nothing new for the 131-year-old silver chalice. Players, coaches and staff have mishandled it for more than a century.

The Cup has been submerged in pools and the Atlantic Ocean over the years.

Just this decade, the Tampa Bay Lightning dropped it during their boat parade in 2021. The Colorado Avalanche dented it on the ice the night they won the following year.

The Panthers’ damage adds another chapter to the Cup’s long history of celebration-related injuries.
