The Ottawa Senators announced that Carter Yakemchuk recorded a goal and an assist in his NHL debut, helping the team defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2.

Yakemchuk, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 draft, was recalled from the American Hockey League’s Belleville Senators earlier Tuesday. The 20-year-old defenseman from Alberta was called up due to injuries sidelining five Ottawa defensemen: Thomas Chabot, Dennis Gilbert, Nick Jensen, Jake Sanderson, and Lassi Thomson.

The rookie had recorded 10 goals in 50 games with Belleville before his promotion.

Brady Tkachuk scored his 20th goal of the season for Ottawa, which extended its winning streak to four games. The Senators have won nine of their last 11 games as they continue pushing for an Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Lars Eller added the other goal for Ottawa.

Linus Ullmark made 32 saves in the victory.

Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin scored on a third-period power play in his return from a seven-game absence due to a lower-body injury. Dominik Shine scored Detroit’s other goal, while John Gibson stopped 18 shots.

Detroit had won all three previous meetings with Ottawa this season.

Key Moments

The Red Wings appeared to take the lead late in the first period when Alex DeBrincat scored on a power play. Ottawa challenged the goal, and officials ruled Detroit was offside.

Ottawa converted on its own power play with 2:45 remaining in the first period. Tkachuk tipped in Tim Stutzle’s shot for the opening goal.

Yakemchuk scored at 9:28 of the second period, skating from the point to the right circle and beating Gibson on the glove side.

Eller made it 3-0 less than two minutes later.

Up Next: Ottawa hosts Pittsburgh on Thursday night, while Detroit visits Buffalo on Friday night.
