The Red Wings defeated the Dallas Stars 6-4 Monday night, powered by third-period goals from Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond.
Seider broke a 3-3 tie with a power-play goal early in the third period. Raymond extended Detroit’s lead midway through the frame before Vladimir Tarasenko sealed the win with an empty-netter with 1:56 remaining.
Dallas made it interesting when Wyatt Johnston cut the deficit to one goal with 7:04 left to play.
Jonatan Berggren tied the game for Detroit shortly before Seider’s go-ahead goal. Cam Talbot made 25 saves in the Red Wings’ final home game this season.
Albert Johansson opened the scoring for Detroit, with Alex DeBrincat adding another goal in the first period to give the Red Wings an early advantage.
The Stars got a short-handed, tiebreaking goal from Colin Blackwell midway through the second period. Lian Bichsel and Evgenii Dadonov scored game-tying goals in the first and second periods for Dallas. Jake Oettinger stopped 31 shots in the loss.
Dallas, which has reached the Western Conference finals in consecutive seasons, will face Colorado in the first round of the playoffs. The Stars eliminated the Avalanche in last year’s second round.
Detroit has now missed the playoffs for nine straight seasons.
Team Trends
The Stars have lost six straight games, their longest skid under coach Peter DeBoer’s three-season tenure.
The Red Wings have won two straight and four of their last six games, though the late-season improvement comes too late to salvage their playoff hopes.
Milestones
Patrick Kane appeared in his 1,300th NHL game, ranking eighth among American-born players. He recorded his 850th career assist on DeBrincat’s goal.
Stars captain Jamie Benn continues to struggle with a season-high 16-game scoring drought. He was initially credited with a goal that would have been the 400th of his career, but a scoring change awarded the goal to Bichsel instead.
Up Next
The Stars visit Nashville while the Red Wings travel to New Jersey on Wednesday night.
