The Edmonton Oilers announced a dominant 5-1 victory over the Calgary Flames, with Connor McDavid recording five assists and Leon Draisaitl completing a hat trick in Tuesday’s Battle of Alberta matchup.
Zach Hyman contributed a goal and two assists while Evan Bouchard added two helpers for the Oilers (19-13-6). Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also found the back of the net in the convincing win.
The victory extends Edmonton’s hot streak to four wins in five games. The club has posted an 8-2-1 record over its last 11 contests heading into the holiday break.
Mackenzie Weegar scored the lone goal for Calgary (15-18-4), which had its two-game winning streak snapped.
Goaltending Battle
Connor Ingram stopped 18 shots to improve to 2-0-0 since joining Edmonton. The netminder made his second consecutive NHL start for the first time since early February when he was with Utah.
Calgary’s Dustin Wolf made 34 saves in the losing effort.
McDavid’s Historic Night
McDavid’s five-assist performance extended his point streak to 11 games. He’s collected 12 goals and 19 assists during that stretch.
The superstar captain recorded his 45th career game with at least four points. That total ties Jari Kurri for second in Oilers franchise history.
Draisaitl Breaks Drought in Style
Draisaitl’s hat trick was particularly significant given his recent scoring struggles. The German forward entered the game mired in an eight-game goal drought – his longest regular-season stretch without a goal since February into March of 2021.
His third goal of the night came on the power play with 14:22 remaining, giving Edmonton a commanding 5-1 lead. The marker was Draisaitl’s 20th of the season and ninth career regular-season hat trick.
The three-goal performance moved Draisaitl past Glenn Anderson (417) for third in Oilers franchise history. Only Wayne Gretzky and Kurri remain ahead of him on the club’s all-time scoring list.
Draisaitl has collected points in 10 of his last 11 games, totaling five goals and 19 assists during that span.
Special Teams Dominance
Edmonton’s power play continued its league-leading performance, converting on three of six opportunities.
The Oilers entered the game with the NHL’s best power-play percentage at 33.3%. Over their last 10 games, they’ve been even more lethal with the man advantage, scoring 14 goals on 33 chances for a 42.4% success rate.
Team Trends
The Oilers improved to 16-1-3 when scoring first this season.
Edmonton also maintained its perfect record in alternate jerseys, improving to 4-0 while outscoring opponents 26-10 in those games.
For Calgary, forward Mikael Backlund has been a bright spot recently with six points in his last three games. That production comes after managing just three points in his previous 10 contests.
After the holiday break, these Alberta rivals will face off again Saturday in Calgary.
