The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Tuesday that goaltender Joseph Woll is taking a leave of absence to attend to a personal family matter.

The team didn’t provide a timeline for his return.

Woll posted a 27-14-1 record with a .909 save percentage last season. He appeared in a career-high 42 games with Toronto.

The 27-year-old was expected to share the crease with Anthony Stolarz this season. The leave creates uncertainty about Toronto’s goaltending depth heading into the new campaign.

Dennis Hildeby sits as the team’s third goalie on the depth chart.

Hildeby has just six games of NHL experience. His limited resume could force the Maple Leafs to consider roster adjustments if Woll’s absence extends into the regular season.

Toronto opens its season Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens. The timing of Woll’s leave means Stolarz will likely handle the bulk of the goaltending duties early in the season.
