Tyson Barrie announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday, ending a 14-year career.
The 34-year-old defenseman played 822 regular-season games across five franchises. He’s best remembered for his eight seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, who drafted him in the third round (64th overall) in 2009.
Barrie played 484 games with Colorado, recording 307 points for the Avalanche.
He became one of the league’s top offensive defensemen during his prime years. Barrie led Avalanche defensemen in scoring for six separate seasons.
That included back-to-back 14-goal campaigns in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The Victoria, British Columbia native also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, and Calgary Flames. He appeared in just 13 games with Calgary last season while splitting time with their AHL affiliate.
Barrie played 47 career playoff games. Most of those came with the Avalanche (21 games) and Oilers (20 games).
His retirement marks the end of a career that saw him establish himself as a reliable offensive contributor from the blue line throughout more than a decade in the NHL.
