Team Canada announced Shea Theodore will not continue in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to a wrist injury sustained against Sweden.

The Vegas Golden Knights listed Theodore as week-to-week. The team’s next game is Feb. 22 against the Vancouver Canucks.

“Heartbreaking for the kid,” head coach Jon Cooper said, per Sportsnet’s Luke Fox.

The injury occurred in the second period when Theodore braced for contact from Sweden’s Adrian Kempe along the boards. He left the game and did not return.

Theodore logged 6:58 of ice time before the injury, with Canada leading 2-0 at the time.

Travis Sanheim of the Philadelphia Flyers was a healthy scratch for the opening game and could draw into the lineup.

Tournament rules prevent Canada from adding another defenseman unless the roster drops below 18 healthy skaters, according to TSN’s Chris Johnston. The team started with 20 skaters.

This marks the second Golden Knights defender to exit the tournament after Alex Pietrangelo withdrew earlier due to injury.
