The Nashville Predators announced that center Ryan O’Reilly will be evaluated after taking a stick to the face during Tuesday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
“For those who are concerned about Ryan O’Reilly, we expect that he is going to be OK,” the team said in a statement, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. “He is flying home with the team from Columbus tonight and will be evaluated by our medical team in Nashville. We expect to have an update on his playing status sometime Thursday.”
The incident happened midway through the third period when O’Reilly was struck near his left eye by Blue Jackets forward Charlie Coyle’s stick during a faceoff. He didn’t return to the game.
Blood was visible near O’Reilly’s left eye after the collision.
The 35-year-old center is among just four remaining NHL players who don’t wear a visor. The league made visors mandatory for new players in 2013, but grandfathered in existing players who chose to continue playing without them.
O’Reilly’s injury comes at a crucial time for Nashville. He’s considered a strong trade candidate ahead of Friday’s deadline.
The veteran center has posted 22 goals and 37 assists in 61 games this season, making him an attractive option for contending teams looking to add offensive depth.
Nashville will provide another update on O’Reilly’s condition Thursday after their medical staff completes their evaluation.
