Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon received a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for goaltender interference against Edmonton Oilers netminder Connor Ingram on Tuesday.
Ingram was cut on the play and left the game. He didn’t return for the third period.
Officials upheld the major penalty after a video review.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar criticized the ruling after Colorado’s 4-3 loss.
“There’s no chance that he hits the goalie if (Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse) doesn’t run into him. He’s not hitting the goalie,” Bednar said.
“I don’t care if he’s injured, not injured, it’s a severe crash, not a severe crash: It’s not a penalty. If you put guys into your own goalie, it’s not a penalty. That’s the way I see it.”
MacKinnon leads the NHL with 43 goals and is tied for second in scoring with 104 points. He had 20 penalty minutes in 61 games entering Tuesday’s contest.
The 2024 Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP also won the league’s sportsmanship award in 2019. The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy recognizes players who combine skill with gentlemanly conduct.
Tristan Jarry stopped 11 of 12 shots in relief of Ingram to help Edmonton secure the victory.
The NHL has never suspended MacKinnon in his 932-game career.
