The Ottawa Senators will be without defenseman Thomas Chabot for an extended period after he suffered a right arm injury during Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers, head coach Travis Green told reporters.

Green said Chabot will be “out for a while” but didn’t provide a specific timeline for his return.

The injury occurred in the final seconds of the first period when Rangers captain J.T. Miller cross-checked Chabot. The 29-year-old defenseman immediately left for the locker room and didn’t return.

Officials didn’t call a penalty on the play.

The loss of Chabot creates a major hole in Ottawa’s blue line. The Senators have already been without star defenseman Jake Sanderson since March 7 due to an upper-body injury.

Ottawa is also missing defensemen Nick Jensen and Dennis Gilbert to injuries. Recent call-up Lassi Thomson also left Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury, further depleting the team’s defensive depth.

Chabot has recorded seven goals and 31 points in 54 games this season.

Since Sanderson’s injury, Chabot has shouldered a heavier workload. He’s averaged over 28 minutes of ice time in seven games without his defensive partner.

The veteran has already missed 13 games this season due to various injuries.

Ottawa currently sits two points behind the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference as the team pushes for a playoff berth.
