General manager Mathieu Darche announced Thursday that Patrick Roy will return as head coach of the New York Islanders next season.

The team won’t retain assistant coaches John MacLean and Tommy Albelin.

Roy took over when the Islanders fired Lane Lambert mid-season last January. He guided the team to the playoffs in his first partial season but couldn’t get them back this year.

The Islanders finished nine points behind the final wild-card spot in 2024-25.

Since taking over behind the Islanders bench, the Hall of Fame goaltender has compiled a 55-47-17 record. This marks Roy’s second stint as an NHL head coach.

He previously led the Colorado Avalanche from 2013-2016. Roy won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Islanders enter the offseason with approximately $26.5 million in salary cap space to make roster improvements.

They also own the first overall pick in the upcoming draft after a surprising lottery win.
