The Washington Capitals announced that captain Alex Ovechkin made NHL history Wednesday night, becoming the first player to reach 900 career goals in the team’s 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
The 40-year-old forward scored the milestone goal in the second period. He collected a loose puck and backhanded it past Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington, who was out of position.

Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record last season with his 895th goal.
He finished that campaign with 44 goals in 65 games despite missing significant time with a broken leg early in the season. The injury kept him out of the lineup for several weeks but he returned to form quickly.
Wednesday’s goal was Ovechkin’s third through 13 games of the 2025-26 season. He’s maintaining his scoring pace despite entering his 21st NHL season.
The milestone puts Ovechkin 10 points away from tying Joe Sakic for 10th place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. His next major goal-scoring milestone would be reaching 1,000 career goals.
Ovechkin is in the final year of his current contract with the Capitals. He hasn’t announced whether he’ll continue playing beyond this season, leaving his future uncertain as he continues to rewrite NHL record books.
