The Toronto Maple Leafs are counting on Matthew Knies to step into a bigger role this season. The forward says he’s ready for the pressure that comes with playing in the NHL’s biggest market.

“I want that feeling that I’m playing for the whole city. I don’t really look at it as something that can tear me down. It’s something that is going to make me better.”

Knies told The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke he understands expectations will be higher this season.

The 22-year-old is entering the first year of a six-year, $46.5-million contract. He’s expected to help replace some of the offense lost when Mitch Marner left the team.

Knies posted 29 goals and 58 points in his second full NHL season in 2024-25.

He added five goals and two assists in the playoffs before the Florida Panthers eliminated Toronto in Game 7 of the second round.

The breakout season earned Knies a spot at USA’s Olympic orientation camp this summer. Now he’s looking to build on that success.

“I have to perform better and take on a little bit more ice time or take on a bigger role. If that’s what’s needed and expected, then you know I’m going to be ready for it and hopefully successful in those areas.”

Knies says he’s focused on one particular area of improvement heading into the new season.

“I want to get as physically dominant as possible.”

Toronto selected Knies in the second round of the 2021 draft. He joined the Leafs at the end of the 2022-23 season after a strong collegiate career at Minnesota.

The added responsibility comes as the Leafs look to take another step forward in the playoffs after years of early exits.
