The Minnesota Wild announced that Kirill Kaprizov broke the franchise career goals record Tuesday night, reaching 220 goals in a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at home.

Kaprizov’s record-breaking goal came on an empty-netter in the third period. He fired a backhander from center ice for his 35th goal of the season, pushing him past Marian Gaborik for the most goals in Wild history.

Mats Zuccarello, Brock Faber and Quinn Hughes each contributed a goal and an assist. Yakov Trenin also scored for Minnesota.

The Wild ended a two-game losing streak with the win. They’ve now dominated Tampa Bay at home, posting a 16-3-0 record against the Lightning in Minnesota.

Matt Boldy recorded three assists, tying a season high. The performance extended his points streak to 10 games, matching a career high.

Filip Gustavsson made 26 saves for Minnesota. He’s 5-1-0 in his past six starts.

Tampa Bay opened a four-game road trip with the loss. The Lightning have now lost three straight games after going 20-1-1 in their previous 22 games.

Nikita Kucherov scored the lone goal for Tampa Bay. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 17 shots in the losing effort.

Hughes’ goal in the third period sparked a brief “U-S-A! U-S-A!” chant from the crowd. The defenseman was a member of the recent gold-medal winning U.S. team.

Game Flow

Faber opened the scoring less than four minutes into the first period for a 1-0 Minnesota lead.

Zuccarello extended the advantage early in the second period with a power-play goal during a 4-on-3 situation. The goal marked the eighth straight game Minnesota has scored with the man advantage.

Kucherov responded for Tampa Bay just over halfway through the second period. He finished a passing play with Brayden Point and Jake Guentzel to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Trenin scored what proved to be the game-winner at 17:10 of the second period. The forward lost the puck while trying to split two defenders but continued to the net and capitalized when Vasilevskiy couldn’t cover a slow-sliding puck.
