The New York Islanders announced Tuesday they will not renew Lou Lamoriello’s contract as president of hockey operations and general manager.

The team will immediately begin searching for their next GM.

“The Islanders extend a heartfelt thank you to Lou Lamoriello for his extraordinary commitment over the past seven years,” the team said in a statement. “His dedication to the team is in line with his Hall of Fame career.”

Lamoriello, 82, joined the Islanders’ front office in 2018.

Under his leadership, New York reached the Eastern Conference Final in back-to-back seasons, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in both 2020 and 2021.

The team hasn’t won a playoff series since those conference final appearances and missed the playoffs entirely this season.

During his tenure, Lamoriello made several significant roster moves. He traded Devon Toews to the Colorado Avalanche, acquired Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks, and signed goaltender Ilya Sorokin to an eight-year, $66-million extension in 2023.

Before joining the Islanders, Lamoriello spent three years with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, he’s best known for his time with the New Jersey Devils, where he served as GM from 1987-2015. During that period, the Devils made 21 playoff appearances and captured three Stanley Cups.

Lamoriello was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009.
