The Carolina Hurricanes completed a dramatic comeback Sunday night, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 for their fourth straight win.
Taylor Hall and Logan Stankoven scored third-period goals to rally Carolina from a two-goal deficit. The Hurricanes trailed 4-2 midway through the second period before storming back.
Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, and Shawn Walker also scored for Carolina. Brandon Bussi made 16 saves.
William Nylander scored twice for Toronto, while John Tavares and Auston Matthews each contributed a goal and an assist. Matthew Knies added two assists and Dennis Hildeby stopped 41 shots in the loss.
The game served as this year’s Hall of Fame game. The class of 2025 was honored before puck drop ahead of Monday’s induction ceremony.
Zdeno Chara, Joe Thornton, Duncan Keith, Alexander Mogilny, Jennifer Botterill and Brianna Decker will be enshrined in the player category. Jack Parker and Danièle Sauvageau are set to enter as builders.
Third Period Rally
Hall tied the score 4-4 at 3:20 of the third period on a rebound from the right side of the net.
Stankoven gave Carolina its first lead of the night with 7:47 remaining. He finished off a passing play with K’Andre Miller and Nikolaj Ehlers.
The Maple Leafs had built their advantage earlier in the game. Nylander scored his second goal on a power play with 59 seconds left in the first period for a 3-2 lead.
Matthews extended Toronto’s lead to 4-2 at 11:03 of the second period with his ninth goal of the season.
Walker pulled Carolina within one goal with 3:09 remaining in the second period. His shot from the right point found its way through traffic.
Milestone Night
Tavares played the 1,200th regular-season game of his NHL career Sunday night.
He joined former Toronto captain Mats Sundin as the second player in franchise history to register a point when skating in that milestone contest. Sundin was on hand for the Hockey Hall of Fame festivities.
