The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Anaheim Ducks 5-2, with defenseman Jalen Chatfield scoring the tiebreaking goal in his 300th career game and goalie Frederik Andersen ending a nine-game losing streak.
Chatfield netted his first goal of the season during Carolina’s explosive three-goal second period. The defenseman also added an assist in the milestone performance.
Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall each contributed a goal and assist for the Hurricanes. Mark Jankowski and Jackson Blake also found the net as Carolina won its third consecutive game.
Andersen made 11 saves for his first victory since Nov. 6. He’d gone 0-7-2 during his winless stretch that lasted over two months.
The Ducks got goals from Ryan Poehling and Mikael Granlund but couldn’t avoid their eighth straight loss (0-7-1). Ville Husso stopped 30 shots in the losing effort.
Anaheim actually held leads in both of the first two periods before Carolina’s second-period surge.
Poehling opened the scoring with 6:42 left in the first period. Jankowski tied it on Carolina’s 17th shot of the game at 8:56 of the second period, with the puck deflecting off Anaheim defenseman Drew Helleson’s skate.
Granlund initially shot wide on an open net but stayed in position to tap in a pass from Mason McTavish for a 2-1 Ducks lead with 6:42 remaining in the second.
Stankoven answered quickly, scoring for the third straight game. He took a pass from Hall on a two-man rush to pull the Hurricanes even.
Chatfield’s go-ahead goal came with 3:52 left in the second period. Carolina dominated the frame, outshooting Anaheim 18-3.
Blake and Hall added third-period goals to seal the victory. Hall’s came into an empty net.
The Ducks played without winger Troy Terry, who co-leads the team with 42 points. He missed his first game this season due to an upper-body injury.
