The New Jersey Devils announced Thursday that Timo Meier is taking a personal leave of absence to handle a family health matter.

The organization didn’t provide additional details. Devils officials said they’re supporting Meier and his family while requesting privacy during this time.

Meier, 29, is in his third season with New Jersey after arriving from San Jose at the trade deadline in February 2023.

The Swiss forward spent the early part of his NHL career with the Sharks before the Devils acquired him. He’s been a key contributor since joining the organization.

Meier has already earned a spot on Switzerland’s Olympic roster for the upcoming games in Milan. Devils teammates Nico Hischier and Jonas Siegenthaler will also represent their country.

The team hasn’t announced a timeline for Meier’s return.
