The San Jose Sharks defeated the Minnesota Wild 6-5 in overtime Sunday, with Macklin Celebrini scoring the game-winner unassisted at 3:47 of the extra period.

Celebrini gathered a loose puck in the San Jose zone after goaltender Yaroslav Askarov made a save on Brock Faber. The rookie then raced in alone and beat Jesper Wallstedt for his second goal of the season.

The 19-year-old also recorded two assists for a three-point performance.

William Eklund scored twice for San Jose, while Michael Misa, Ryan Reaves and Tyler Toffoli also found the net. Askarov made 28 saves in the victory.

Minnesota mounted a comeback in the third period. Joel Eriksson Ek scored with 2:18 remaining in regulation to cap a three-goal frame for the Wild and force overtime.

Kirill Kaprizov recorded his third assist of the game on Eriksson Ek’s goal, giving him 400 career points.

The Sharks appeared to take control when Toffoli scored a power-play goal 7:52 into the third period for a 5-3 lead. But Zeev Buium answered just 36 seconds later when his shot deflected off San Jose’s Ty Dellandrea.

Marcus Johansson, Marco Rossi and Ryan Hartman also scored for Minnesota, which is now 1-4-2 in its past seven games. Wallstedt stopped 19 shots in the loss.

San Jose built momentum in the second period when Eklund and Reaves scored 19 seconds apart for a 4-2 lead. It marked the second time the Sharks led by two goals.

The Sharks jumped out early in the first period. Eklund scored on the power play before Misa netted his first career goal on a rebound seven minutes later for a 2-0 advantage.

Historic rookie production

The performance continued a remarkable run for San Jose’s young core. The past 11 goals scored by the Sharks have featured either the 18-year-old Misa or 19-year-old Celebrini dating back to Oct. 21.

It’s just the second time in NHL history a teenager has factored in at least 11 straight team goals. Edmonton had 13 consecutive goals from Nov. 26-Dec. 7, 1980.

With his three-point game, Celebrini became the second teenager in league history with at least 12 points through his team’s first five road games in a season. Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby had 13 points in 2006-07.
