Cal Clutterbuck announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday with a post on Instagram.
The 37-year-old forward didn’t play during the 2023-24 season after his contract with the New York Islanders expired.
Clutterbuck holds the NHL’s all-time record for hits with 4,029.
The league didn’t officially track hits until the 2007-08 season, making his achievement even more notable.
Clutterbuck spent 11 seasons with the Islanders, establishing himself as a reliable bottom-six forward known for his physical play and defensive responsibility. Before joining New York, he played six seasons with the Minnesota Wild, who selected him in the third round of the 2006 NHL Draft.
Throughout his career, Clutterbuck earned a reputation as one one of the league’s most punishing body-checkers while contributing valuable minutes on the penalty kill.
