The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that defenseman Damon Severson will miss the remainder of the season following shoulder surgery performed Thursday.
Severson suffered the injury during the third period of Columbus’s game at Montreal on March 26. He was hurt after taking a shoulder-to-shoulder hit from Canadiens forward Zachary Bolduc.
The 29-year-old defenseman recorded eight goals and 32 points in 71 games this season.
Severson ranks third on the Blue Jackets in average ice time at 21:04 per game. Among Columbus defensemen, he’s second in both assists (24) and points.
The injury comes at a crucial time for Columbus’s playoff push. The Blue Jackets have lost five consecutive games and are currently tied with Detroit and Ottawa for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Columbus has six games remaining in the regular season to secure their playoff position.
